The Super Eagles of Nigeria fought back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw against Russia in an intense international friendly held on Friday, showcasing grit and resilience despite being second-best in possession.
Russia opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi unfortunately turned the ball into his own net while trying to clear a dangerous cross, giving the hosts an early advantage.
Nigeria responded in the second half with renewed urgency, and their efforts paid off in the 71st minute. Forward Tolu Arokodare latched onto a well-timed pass before slotting home the equaliser to level the match for the Super Eagles.
Although Russia dominated possession with 58% of the ball and attempted 497 passes at an 87% success rate, they struggled to break down Nigeria’s compact defense. Nigeria, with just 42% possession and 367 passes (81% accuracy), were more clinical in front of goal.
The Super Eagles registered four shots on target from six attempts, while Russia managed ten shots but only tested the Nigerian goalkeeper twice.
In a match marked by physical duels and tactical discipline, Russia committed 16 fouls and received three yellow cards. Nigeria, more measured in their challenges, committed 11 fouls and picked up a single booking.
The result offers positives for both teams as they continue preparations for competitive fixtures, with Nigeria showcasing resilience and composure under pressure.
