Defending champions of the National Youth Games (NYG), Team Delta, have officially entered closed camp as preparations intensify for the ninth edition of the Games, scheduled for August 26 to September 6 in Asaba.
More than 600 athletes are currently camped across three facilities — St. Brigid’s School hostel, the Delta Sports Commission hostel, and the hockey hostel in Okpanam.
Speaking on the preparations, Festus Ohwojero, an official of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), confirmed that the final list of athletes and officials who will represent Delta at the Games will be unveiled later this week.
“We have over 600 athletes in three different camps right now,” Ohwojero said. “Very soon, the number of athletes that will represent Team Delta at the 9th National Youth Games will be made public.”
Bayelsa Shine in Zonal Eliminations
Team Bayelsa impressed in Uyo with a 250-athlete contingent across 10 sports. The girls’ basketball team crushed Rivers 17–9 and Akwa Ibom 16–2 to top the zone, while the boys also qualified despite a narrow loss to Rivers.
In football, Bayelsa boys won all three matches; the girls secured two victories. Both boys’ and girls’ Abula teams also booked places at the Games. Acting Sports Director Andrew Aye hailed the outing, saying Bayelsa has moved from “participating to competing.”
