Veteran Nigerian defender Chidozie Awaziem says he is “excited and motivated” after earning a recall to the Super Eagles squad ahead of next month’s crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

The FC Nantes centre-back, who recently returned to Ligue 1 after a stint in Major League Soccer with Colorado Rapids, is among the early arrivals in Uyo as Nigeria intensifies preparations for the two must-win encounters.

Excitement at Super Eagles Return

Speaking exclusively with Modzero Sports at the Super Eagles camp in Uyo, Awaziem expressed gratitude for his recall under new head coach Eric Chelle.

“Honestly, it feels really good. It feels amazing to be back into the team,” he said.
“It shows the performances I have put in are being recognised. I feel excited to be back, to help the team qualify for the World Cup, which we all want. I feel really good and excited to be here.”

Focus on Rwanda and South Africa

Nigeria face Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on September 6 before traveling to Bloemfontein to meet South Africa three days later. With the Super Eagles sitting outside the top of their group, nothing short of maximum points will be enough to revive their qualification hopes.

Awaziem insists the players are united in their determination.

“The only mindset we have is the winning mentality. We really want to win and everyone is ready for that,” he said.
“It is not going to be easy, but we are Nigerians and we know the spirit that we have. Nigerians should expect a team that will go all out to win the game. We are going to give everything to make sure we get all six points.”

Lessons from a Nomadic Career

Since making his Super Eagles debut in 2017, the 27-year-old defender has built a career across multiple leagues. His journey has included spells in Turkey with Rizespor and Alanyaspor, Spain with Leganés, Portugal with Boavista, Croatia with Hajduk Split, and the United States with FC Cincinnati and Colorado Rapids.

Reflecting on his experiences, Awaziem highlighted how the constant moves shaped him as a player and as a person.

“I made a couple of moves in the last few years which made me improve a lot,” he said.
“I saw different leagues, different cultures, and played with top players. It improved my style of play and also my personal life. Though it was not easy moving from country to country with my family, it gave me a lot of experience. Coming back to the top five leagues is an amazing step for me.”

Faith over Fear

Away from football, Awaziem revealed that his tattoos carry personal meaning. He pointed to one in particular as a source of strength.

“The one that has ‘faith over fear’ on my arm is the most important. It is the symbol of me having faith rather than fear. It gives me the belief that I can do all things through God. It motivates me and gives me confidence.”

A Career of Consistency

Awaziem has earned 34 caps for Nigeria, representing the Super Eagles at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. His recall comes at a time when experience will be crucial for a side desperate to avoid missing consecutive World Cup appearances.

With his defensive solidity and renewed confidence from regular football at Nantes, Awaziem could play a key role in Nigeria’s push to secure vital victories in Uyo and Bloemfontein.
