Team Nigeria Depart for 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo with Full Backing of National Sports Commission

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has pledged dedicated support for Team Nigeria as the nation’s finest athletes jet out for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, scheduled to run from September 13 to 21, 2025.

Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, sent a rallying message of encouragement to the contingent, stressing that both the Commission and millions of Nigerians stand firmly behind the team.

💬 “Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, declared from inception that Nigeria must get it right in athletics,” Olopade said. “This is a moment of pride for our nation, and we trust our athletes to compete with determination and secure podium finishes. The Commission will continue to provide all the support they need and firmly stand behind them as they fly our flag in Tokyo.”

Olopade also confirmed that he will be on ground in Tokyo to lend hands-on support to the delegation, ensuring a smooth experience both on and off the track.

Star Power in Team Nigeria’s 15-Member Squad

The Nigerian team traveling to Tokyo boasts a blend of global superstars and rising prospects across sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws.

Leading the charge is Oluwatobiloba Amusan, the reigning world record holder in the 100m hurdles and Nigeria’s first-ever world champion in athletics. Amusan will be joined by Ese Brume, the Commonwealth Games long jump champion and multiple World Championships medalist.

The women’s squad also features Rosemary Chukwuma in the 100m, Prestina Ochonogor in the long jump, and a powerful throws contingent including Obiageri Amaechi, Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons, and Oyesade Olatoye.

On the men’s side, Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike, Kayinsola Ajayi, and Israel Sunday Okon headline Nigeria’s sprint team, while Samuel Ogazi and Chidi Okezie contest the 400m. Ezekiel Nathaniel takes on the 400m hurdles, with Charles Godfred in the long jump and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in the shot put.
