The Super Eagles’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have suffered another setback after defender Felix Agu was ruled out of the squad due to injury.
Agu, who was expected to fill in at right-back following Bright Osayi-Samuel’s earlier withdrawal, limped off while playing for Werder Bremen at the weekend. Scans have now confirmed an ankle injury that will sideline the 24-year-old for several months.
Werder Bremen confirmed the news on Monday, dealing a major blow both to the German Bundesliga side and to Nigeria’s defensive options. Agu, a former Germany youth international, had been poised to strengthen Eric Chelle’s backline for the qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
In his absence, the Super Eagles have called up Zaidu Sanusi, the Porto left-back, to reinforce the defence as the team faces a growing injury crisis ahead of the crucial fixtures.
The string of defensive setbacks has cast a cloud over Nigeria’s qualification campaign, with key players dropping out at a critical moment.
