Ademola Lookman delivered a standout performance on Sunday as Atalanta stormed to a commanding 4-0 victory over Monza in Serie A, strengthening their push for European qualification with just a few matches left in the season.
The Nigerian winger capped the win with a sharp close-range finish in the 47th minute, underlining his importance to Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.
Atalanta seized control early at the U-Power Stadium, going ahead in the 12th minute when Mateo Retegui set up Charles De Ketelaere for a calm opener. De Ketelaere doubled the lead in the 23rd minute, pouncing on defensive lapses to finish coolly again.
Lookman, who had threatened earlier, added the third just after halftime, latching onto Retegui’s headed assist to slot home confidently. Monza briefly thought they’d pulled one back before halftime through Gaetano Castrovilli, but VAR ruled it out for offside.
Atalanta’s dominance was sealed late when Marco Brescianini smashed in a powerful effort after Mario Pasalic’s tidy setup, with another VAR check confirming the goal.
The result keeps Atalanta firmly in the hunt for a top-four Serie A finish, while Lookman’s return to scoring form provides a timely lift for both his club and Nigeria’s national team ahead of key upcoming fixtures.
