Fulham fell 1-0 to Arsenal on Saturday evening, but the match proved historic for Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi, who etched his name into Premier League history.

Iwobi, one of Fulham’s standout performers this overtime, was named in the starting lineup as the Cottagers faced Mikel Arteta’s league-leading Arsenal. Despite a solid defensive display, the host were unable to get a desired result, conceding from a set piece that handed the Gunners a narrow win.

However, the night marked a personal milestone for Iwobi. According to the Premier League’s official website, the 28-year-old became the Nigerian player with the most Premier League appearances, featuring in his 299th match.

Iwobi surpassed former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi, who previously held the record with 298 appearances. He also moved ahead of Kanu Nwankwo (273), Yakubu Aiyegbeni (252), and John Mikel Obi (249) on the all-time Nigerian appearances chart.

The former Arsenal and Everton midfielder is now on the brink of reaching 300 Premier League appearances, a feat he could achieve when Fulham visit Newcastle United next weekend.

Iwobi also recently played a key role in helping the Super Eagles secure a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs during the last international window, further cementing his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most consistent football ambassadors.
