Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie enjoyed a dream Women’s Super League (WSL) debut, producing a commanding performance as Brighton & Hove Albion battled to a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa in their season opener at Broadfield Stadium.

Debut to Remember

The Nigeria international, signed from Paris FC this summer, was one of two debutants in Brighton’s starting XI alongside Japanese defender Moeke Minami. Both impressed, but it was Nnadozie’s composure and sharp reflexes that stole the spotlight.

The 24-year-old made four key saves, marshalled her defence with authority, and earned Brighton their first clean sheet of the new campaign. Her efforts were quickly recognised by supporters, who voted her as the club’s Player of the Match.

Brighton Dominate Early Exchanges

Brighton started brightly, dominating possession in the first half and pushing Aston Villa onto the back foot. Michelle Agyemang, fresh from her breakout summer with the Lionesses, saw her deflected strike hit the post, while Kiko Seike’s close-range header drifted just wide.

Despite their territorial dominance, Brighton failed to convert their chances, leaving the game goalless at half-time.

Villa Threaten but Denied

Villa gradually grew into the game, with England international Rachel Daly rattling the crossbar from 25 yards in the first half. Late drama followed in stoppage time when Lynn Wilms’ free-kick also cannoned off the bar, but Brighton held firm.

Nnadozie was at the heart of their resilience, pulling off a string of saves to deny Villa’s attackers and showing the confidence that made her one of the WSL’s most high-profile summer arrivals.

Sarina Wiegman in the Stands

England boss Sarina Wiegman was among the spectators, assessing players ahead of international duty. She witnessed a tightly contested affair that highlighted Brighton’s new defensive steel and Villa’s attacking intent.

What’s Next

Brighton will travel to the Academy Stadium to face Manchester City on Friday, 12 September, while Aston Villa prepare for a home showdown against defending champions Chelsea on Sunday, 14 September.

For Brighton, the biggest positive was the arrival of a new guardian in goal Chiamaka Nnadozie, who has already begun to write her WSL story in style.
