Crystal Palace have confirmed the signing of Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche from Getafe on a season-long loan with an option to buy. The 22-year-old Super Eagles talent joins as a direct replacement for Eberechi Eze, who recently moved to Arsenal, and is regarded by manager Oliver Glasner as a vital reinforcement for the Premier League campaign.
Palace overcame strong competition from Aston Villa and Sunderland to secure Uche’s signature, while a proposed deal with Wolves collapsed late in negotiations. The new arrival will wear the No. 12 shirt at Selhurst Park.
Uche’s football journey has been remarkable. Originally signed as a central defender, he was pushed into midfield before evolving into a centre forward. His versatility became a hallmark at Getafe, where he scored four goals and provided six assists last season to help them avoid relegation. This season, he has already contributed a goal and an assist in a win over Celta Vigo.
By joining Palace, Uche becomes the sixth Nigerian to represent the club, following in the footsteps of Shola Ameobi, Victor Moses, George Ndah, Dele Adebola, and Ade Akinbiyi. Moses remains the most successful of them, with 69 appearances and 11 goals.
The timing of Uche’s move is also significant for Nigeria. He is set to fly directly to Uyo to join the Super Eagles ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda on September 6 and South Africa on September 9. His presence is expected to provide a major boost as Nigeria look to revive their hopes of reaching the World Cup.
For Crystal Palace, Uche’s arrival comes after the signing of Yeremi Pino, strengthening Oliver Glasner’s forward line. With his adaptability, energy, and proven track record in Spain, Uche is expected to make an immediate impact in the Premier League while also playing a crucial role for the Super Eagles.
