In a move to motivate and reward excellence, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has pledged substantial cash incentives for athletes representing the state at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, also known as Gateway Games 2024.
During a visit to the Athletics Camp at Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area, Governor Abiodun addressed the state contingents, emphasizing the importance of their participation and the state’s commitment to their success.
“I understand that when you win a medal, there is an instant award. Once you get a medal, you get a reward, a huge one,” he stated. “Anyone who wins a gold medal in this festival will receive from me the sum of N2.5 million. For every silver medal, I will give that medalist N1.5 million. Anyone who gets a bronze medal will receive N1 million.”
Additionally, the governor announced an immediate disbursement of N50,000 to each participating Ogun State athlete, urging them to make the state proud.
“You are here because you are the best from Ogun State. Anyone who is not here is not good enough to represent Ogun State. You are not here to compete alone, but to win. We are hosting to win, and you must bring the medals home,” he declared.
Governor Abiodun highlighted Ogun State’s rich history of producing world-class sportsmen and women, expressing confidence in the athletes’ ability to uphold this legacy.
He also noted the state’s investment in infrastructure and facilities to ensure a seamless competition, marking the first time all athletes are camped together for the National Sports Festival.
“The National Sports Festival was organized to bring all Nigerians together in unity. By the time you leave here, you will have bonded together and exchanged hands of fellowship across the Niger and Benue,” he said.
The governor assured that any minor challenges faced would be addressed promptly, emphasizing the state’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for the athletes.
The 22nd National Sports Festival, taking place from May 16 to 30, 2025, features over 15,000 athletes competing for 2,150 medals across various sports disciplines.
