Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, will battle Niger Republic in the semifinals of the 2025 WAFU Zone B U-20 Boys Cup on Sunday, as the road to regional glory intensifies.
The eagerly anticipated clash is the first of two semifinal fixtures and will kick off at 4:00 PM (Nigerian time) at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, Accra, Ghana.
Under the guidance of head coach Aliyu Zubairu, the Flying Eagles emerged top of Group A after an unbeaten run. They opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against tournament hosts Ghana, before securing a commanding win over Benin Republic to finish with four points and book their spot in the final four.
Their opponents, Niger, endured a tougher route through Group B. They began with a narrow 1-0 victory over Togo, but suffered a 1-0 loss to group leaders Côte d’Ivoire in their second outing. A goalless draw against Burkina Faso in their final group fixture was enough to seal second place with four points, sending them through to the semifinals.
Later on Sunday, the second semifinal will see Côte d’Ivoire take on host nation Ghana at 8:00 PM (Nigerian time). Côte d’Ivoire qualified as Group B winners with a perfect record, while Ghana finished second in Group A behind Nigeria.
Winners of both semifinal ties will meet in the tournament’s grand finale on Wednesday next week, with the 2025 WAFU Zone B title and bragging rights in West African youth football up for grabs.
