Nigeria’s Flying Eagles kept their U-20 FIFA World Cup hopes alive with a tense 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia, a result that came only after a dramatic stoppage-time penalty.
The match was anything but straightforward. Nigeria struck first through Salihu Nasiru’s well-placed header from a Sani Suleiman delivery, but the Saudi’s quickly replied in the 21st minute when Amar Al Yuhaybi equalized, signaling that it would be a long night for the West Africans.
Nigeria edged back in front before halftime, with Amos Ochoche finishing smartly after a Nasiru assist, but the lead didn’t last long after the break. Just five minutes into the second half, Talal Haji’s header made it 2-2, putting the pressure squarely back on the Flying Eagles.
For much of the second half, Saudi Arabia looked dangerous, and Nigeria had to dig deep to hold their ground. Relief only came in added time when a Saudi defender handled the ball in the box. Daniel Bameyi stepped up and converted the decisive penalty, sparking huge celebrations but also underlining how narrow the escape had been.
