Former Super Eagles Striker Brown Ideye Retires from Professional Football

Former Super Eagles striker, Brown Ideye, has officially announced his retirement from professional football after nearly two decades in the game. The 36-year-old shared the news on his social media, expressing gratitude to God, his family, teammates, journalists, and Nigerian fans for their immense support throughout his career.

“After much thought and consideration with mixed emotions, I’ve decided to retire from professional football,” Ideye wrote. “Thank you, Nigeria, for the opportunity you gave me to wear the national colours and be among the Super Eagles. Though my time as a pro player has come to an end, football will always be a part of my life as I enter my next chapter.”

His Farewell Message

In his heartfelt retirement statement, Ideye reflected on the highs and lows of his career:

“I will first like to thank God for the talent and the long career I’ve enjoyed. I thank my family and friends for their unwavering love, support and understanding till this day. This game made me and gave me everything, incredible joy, sad days, the opportunity to travel and see the world, lifelong friendships, and so many unforgettable memories.”

He extended appreciation to agents, coaches, teammates, and sports journalists who contributed to his journey, as well as fans who supported him in good times and bad.

“To every club I’ve had the honour of wearing their jersey and representing, every coach and teammate who pushed and rooted for me to be better, and every fan who supported me through highs and lows, thank you.”

International Career

Between 2010 and 2016, Ideye represented Nigeria 28 times, scoring six goals. He was a key part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, helping the country lift its third continental crown. He also featured at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

Club Career

Ideye began his professional career in Nigeria with Bayelsa United and Ocean Boys before moving to Europe. He played for Sochaux (France), Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine), and later moved to the Premier League with West Bromwich Albion, where he scored four goals.

His career also took him to Olympiacos (Greece), Tianjin Teda (China), Málaga (Spain), and Aris Thessaloniki (Greece). He ended his playing days in the Nigerian league with Enyimba, making his final appearance in May 2025 against Plateau United.

Life After Football

Although retiring from active football, Ideye is not stepping away from the game. He has already taken up a role in player development with Atlantic Business FC in Nigeria’s TCC League, ensuring his wealth of experience continues to inspire and shape the next generation of footballers.
