Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets began their WAFU-B U17 Championship campaign in style, securing a dominant 4-1 victory over the Baby Cheetahs of Benin Republic in Yamoussoukro on Wednesday.
The five-time world champions took control of the game early, with Boluwatife Thompson winning a penalty just three minutes in, which was calmly converted. Moments later, David Edeh doubled the lead with a spectacular free-kick in the 5th minute, setting the tone for a commanding first-half display.
By the 14th minute, Nigeria had extended their advantage to three goals, showcasing pace, creativity, and precise finishing. The Eaglets continued to apply pressure, and their intricate passing and teamwork forced mistakes from the Beninoise defense. One such error from goalkeeper Warris Soumanou opened the way for a fourth goal after a slick exchange between Thompson and Edeh in the 32nd minute.
Benin Republic managed a consolation on the stroke of halftime through Jeremy Zannou, who struck a low drive past the Nigerian goalkeeper in the 45th minute.
With a solid defensive shape and fluid attacking transitions, Manu Garba’s charges proved too strong for their opponents and signaled their intent to dominate the tournament right from the opening match.
