Super Eagles winger Henry Onyekuru is poised to return to the Turkish Super Lig, with a medical scheduled for Monday after agreeing terms with newly promoted side Gençlerbirliği, according to reports.
The Ankara-based club, who are making their top-flight comeback after being relegated in the 2020/21 season, are banking on Onyekuru’s vast experience to bolster their squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. The Nigerian international has already agreed personal terms and is expected in Turkey on Monday to undergo medical tests and complete the transfer, Fanatik reports.
Onyekuru is no stranger to Turkish football, having made a name for himself during multiple loan stints at Galatasaray. Across his three spells with the Istanbul giants, he netted 22 goals and contributed 12 assists in 71 appearances. He later joined Adana Demirspor, initially on loan from Olympiacos, before signing a permanent deal.
Most recently, the winger featured for Saudi Pro League side Al Fayha, though his 2024/25 season was marred by injuries, limiting him to just four league appearances without a goal.
Gençlerbirliği are eager to finalize the deal swiftly so the 27-year-old can join the squad for preseason preparations. If the move is completed, Onyekuru could link up with fellow Super Eagles star Oghenekaro Etebo, further boosting the team’s Nigerian presence.
Before sealing the deal with Gençlerbirliği, Onyekuru was also on the radar of Turkish giants Beşiktaş and Antalyaspor, both of whom had expressed interest in luring him back to familiar territory.
