As part of activities to mark the 4th anniversary of the crowning of the Olu of Warri, His Royal Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III CFR, Super Eagles legends got together to play a novelty match in his honour and to add colour to the event.
The football match, attended by the high and mighty of the kingdom, top government functionaries and the members of the community, saw the legends trade tackles in honour of His Royal Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III CFR, the Olu of Warri, on the occasion of his 4th coronation anniversary celebrations.
Legends that played the game in the King’s honor included Victor Ikpeba, Taribo West, Finidi George, Austin Eguavoen, Garba Lawal, Idah Peterside, Victor Ezeji, Mutiu Adepoju, Kennedy Boboye, Ifeanyi Ekwueme, Emmanuel Amuneke, Kanu Nwankwo, and others.
Earlier in the day, the Royal father received the entourage at the palace, reminiscing about the team and following the different sets of Super Eagles players over the years. The Royal Father noted that his favourite Super Eagles player of all time is Emmanuel Amunike, noting that the former Barcelona FC winger’s style of play influenced how he played growing up, with Barcelona still enjoying the King’s support because of Amuneke.
Ogiame Atuwatse III expressed optimism that the current set of Super Eagles players will live up to the challenge handed down by the Ex players and hoped Nigerian football will return to its enviable heights.
Speaking to Radio Nigeria, Victor Ikepba noted that the game is a testament to the deep love Ogiame has for the game and the unifying power of sports.
“This initiative reflects the Olu’s deep understanding of how sports can unite people and promote healthy living,___ We’re honored to be part of this celebration of his reign and our sporting heritage.”
Festivities continue to mark the 4th anniversary today, with a mini boat regatta planned as the King and his entourage travel to their ancestral home.
