The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), under the leadership of Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has officially paid the Super Falcons $300,000 (₦450 million) as part of their agreed entitlement from the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) prize money.
The payment represents 30 percent of the $1 million prize money awarded to Nigeria for winning the tournament in Morocco last July. The disbursement fulfills a pre-tournament agreement between the NFF and the players, ensuring transparency and accountability in the handling of funds.
Full Entitlements Delivered
According to respected Nigerian journalist Harry Awurumibe, who first reported the development, the NFF ensured that the agreed sum was transferred directly to the players’ accounts. Beyond the appearance fee, the federation also confirmed that all squad members, coaching crew, and backroom staff have received their full camp allowances and match-winning bonuses, which run into several millions of naira.
The payments were complemented by additional gestures of appreciation from the federation’s corporate sponsors, who celebrated the Falcons with financial packages and receptions upon their triumphant return from Morocco.
Presidential Rewards Amplify Windfall
The Super Falcons’ historic WAFCON victory also drew praise from the highest level of government. President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in recognition of their achievement, rewarded each player and official with $100,000, a three-bedroom flat, and a national honour, and a three-bedroom house, underscoring the importance of the Falcons’ record-extending WAFCON victory to the nation.
Looking Ahead
With their 12th WAFCON title secured, the Super Falcons have further consolidated their dominance in African women’s football. The timely payments and national recognition are expected to boost team morale ahead of upcoming international engagements, including qualifiers for the 2025 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The NFF has also hinted at strengthening its partnership with corporate sponsors to ensure the sustainability of such financial transparency, with the goal of setting a new standard for accountability in Nigerian football.
