The 2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six Playoffs kicked off in thrilling fashion on Saturday, May 10, at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State.
Matchday One delivered high drama, tight contests, and crucial victories for Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens, and hosts Remo Stars Ladies—setting the stage for a fiercely contested race for the league crown.
In the day’s headline result, Remo Stars Ladies stunned reigning champions Edo Queens with a dramatic 1-0 win. Backed by an energetic home crowd, the debutants displayed tactical maturity and defensive grit throughout the encounter. With just two minutes of regulation time remaining, substitute Olasubomi Ogundele pounced on a defensive mix-up to smash in the winner, sending the stadium into celebration. Despite a late push from Edo Queens, Remo Stars held firm to claim a historic victory and open their campaign in style.
Earlier, Bayelsa Queens claimed South-South bragging rights with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rivers Angels. The decisive moment came in the 34th minute when Alaba Obabiyi unleashed a thunderous long-range strike that left the goalkeeper rooted. Rivers Angels were handed a lifeline before halftime with a penalty, but Bayelsa keeper Monle Omini made a brilliant save to deny Ifeoma Ikenokwalu. Omini was outstanding throughout the second half as well, producing multiple saves to keep her side ahead and seal the win. The result positions Bayelsa Queens as strong contenders for their fourth league title.
In the opening match of the day, Nasarawa Amazons pulled off a gritty comeback to beat Naija Ratels 2-1 in the North Central derby. Ratels took the lead in the 12th minute through a stunning free-kick by Rita Tsebee, scoring the tournament’s first goal. But Nasarawa responded before the break, as Janet Akekeromowei calmly finished after a pinpoint pass from Ojiyovwi Kesiena. Captain Josephine Matthias then sealed the comeback in the 55th minute with a composed strike from the edge of the area. Despite late pressure from Naija Ratels, Nasarawa Amazons held firm to secure three points and extend their dominance over their regional rivals.
The playoffs continue with Matchday Two promising even more fireworks as teams battle for supremacy and a shot at the 2024 NWFL title.
