The stage is set for the 9th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG), with 6,382 athletes and officials confirmed to participate in the multi-sport event taking place in Asaba, Delta State, from August 29 to September 6, 2025.

Organised by the National Sports Commission (NSC), the annual Games serve as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s grassroots sports development, providing a platform to discover and nurture the next generation of national champions. The figure was confirmed following the completion of the Digital Registration Management (DRM) process, which ensured accurate data capture of participants from all 36 states of the federation.

This year’s edition will feature 37 sporting events, ranging from athletics and football to gymnastics, swimming, and combat sports. The competitions are expected to showcase not only skill and talent but also teamwork, discipline, and determination from thousands of budding stars.

Team Delta, the defending champions, will be aiming to retain their crown on home soil. However, they face stiff competition from other ambitious contingents determined to unseat them and claim national glory.

Speaking on the importance of the Games, the NSC described the event as “a celebration of talent, resilience, and national unity,” while expressing confidence that the nine-day fiesta will unearth fresh talents capable of representing Nigeria on the global stage.

Since its inception, the National Youth Games has grown into a key sporting calendar event, fostering friendship and unity among Nigeria’s youth, while serving as a breeding ground for athletes who go on to represent the country at continental and international competitions.

With anticipation already building, all eyes will be on Asaba as Nigeria’s sporting future takes centre stage.
