Nigeria international Paul Onuachu is edging closer to a permanent return to Trabzonspor, with Southampton and the Turkish club in advanced negotiations to finalize the striker’s transfer.
According to respected Nigerian journalist Buchi Laba, discussions between both clubs have reached a decisive phase. Southampton are reportedly insisting on a significant upfront payment before signing off on the deal.
Personal terms between the 31-year-old and Trabzonspor have already been agreed, and Onuachu is currently in Nigeria, awaiting clearance to travel to Turkey for his medicals.
The tall striker spent the 2023–2024 season on loan at Trabzonspor, where he had a prolific campaign, netting 17 goals in 25 Super Lig appearances. His performances made an instant impact, prompting Trabzonspor to make his permanent signing a top priority.
The only thing holding Paul Onuachu to Trabzonspor is Southampton wanting a heavy payment upfront. Personal terms already agreed. Paul is currently in Nigeria and waiting for permission to travel to Turkiye for Medicals. ⏳⌛️ https://t.co/dTUyWyOURF

Speaking at a recent press conference, Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan confirmed the club’s intention:
“Paul Onuachu is on our transfer agenda. We are in contact with him and we are working to finalise the deal. Hopefully, we’ll reach an agreement soon.”
Despite Onuachu’s proven quality, Southampton endured a nightmare 2024–25 Premier League season, finishing bottom of the table with just 12 points, narrowly avoiding setting a record for the worst season in league history. Onuachu scored four goals and provided one assist in 28 appearances during the campaign.
With just one year remaining on his current contract, Southampton are reportedly demanding £4.2 million for his transfer, although Trabzonspor are pushing for a lower fee to secure the Nigerian’s return.
The recent appointment of Will Still as Southampton’s new head coach appears to have had little impact on Onuachu’s decision, with the striker fully focused on returning to Turkey, where he became a fan favourite.
Onuachu originally joined Southampton from Belgian side Genk in January 2023. A proven goalscorer, he has enjoyed success in Denmark and Belgium, where he was once voted Belgian Footballer of the Year and won the Golden Bull award as the league’s top scorer.
With a move now appearing imminent, Trabzonspor fans may soon welcome back one of their most impactful recent performers.
