President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promised Nigeria’s record-breaking Super Falcons a befitting celebration following their incredible victory over Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The Super Falcons made history by claiming their 10th continental title, coming from behind to defeat the hosts 3 to 2 at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Saturday.

The final was a rollercoaster of emotions, as Morocco raced to a two-goal lead within the opening 24 minutes. Ghizlane Chebbak, the tournament’s top scorer, opened the scoring in the 12th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error by Nigeria. Just over ten minutes later, Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled the lead after Nigeria’s backline failed to clear their lines inside the penalty box.

However, the Super Falcons responded in heroic fashion with a dominant second-half performance. Goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Florence Ijamilusi, and a late winner by Jennifer Echegini completed a remarkable comeback that sealed the victory for Nigeria and added yet another chapter to their legacy as queens of African football.

In recognition of their historic achievement, President Tinubu initiated a video call with the jubilant squad and coaching crew shortly after the final whistle. His voice filled with pride, the President congratulated the team and assured them that the nation eagerly awaited their return for a fitting celebration.

“As a team, we are very proud of you; the entire nation is proud of you. You lifted our spirits, and we are all very happy,” President Tinubu said during the call.

“You will be celebrated, and I congratulate all the coaches and the management of the team, including the ministers and officials.

“To set the record of victories for the 10th time is not a small feat for the country and the continent as a whole. Safe journey back home, enjoy yourselves and avoid injuries.”

The President made special mention of Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named the Most Valuable Player and also clinched the Woman of the Tournament award. He also praised Esther Okoronkwo, whose fearless performance included a composed penalty in the 64th minute that sparked Nigeria’s resurgence.

President Tinubu lauded Okoronkwo’s courage and leadership, noting her pivotal role in all three goals. After converting the penalty, she went on to assist the equalizer and then delivered the perfect free-kick for the match-winning goal scored by Echegini in the 88th minute.

“Okoronkwo’s penalty was very courageous,” the President added. “She inspired the comeback and showed what Nigerian spirit means on the pitch.”

The players, visibly moved by the call, responded with heartfelt gratitude. Leading the team’s response, Rasheedat Ajibade expressed appreciation to the President for his unwavering support and for ensuring that all player allowances were paid in full ahead of the tournament. She also pledged to deliver the WAFCON trophy personally to him in Abuja.

“Thank you, Mr. President,” the players repeated joyfully throughout the exchange, with many raising their hands in celebration.

“We will bring the trophy to Abuja. Thank you for your support and for believing in us,” Ajibade said.

The call ended on a high note with the team breaking into a passionate rendition of the Nigerian national anthem, followed by three thunderous “Gbosa!” cheers for President Tinubu.

The resounding victory not only cemented Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football but also unified the nation in celebration. With the President’s assurance of an official reception upon their arrival, the Super Falcons will return home as national heroes, basking in the pride of a country that celebrates their excellence and resilience on the continental stage.
