President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship by conferring on them national awards and financial rewards.

During a reception held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, the President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, announced that each player would receive the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in recognition of their outstanding achievement.

In addition, each member of the D’Tigress championship-winning squad will receive a cash reward of $100,000, while members of the technical crew will be awarded $50,000 each in naira equivalent. As part of the reward package, each player will also be given a flat in the Renewed Hope Housing Estate, further underscoring the administration’s appreciation for their dedication and excellence.

D’Tigress arrived in Nigeria earlier that day and were received at the forecourt of the Presidential Villa around 5 p.m. by Vice President Shettima and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The ceremony was held in celebration of their fifth consecutive Afrobasket title and seventh overall, a feat that cements Nigeria’s status as a dominant force in African women’s basketball.

President Tinubu commended the team’s discipline, teamwork, and winning mentality, describing them as role models for young Nigerians and ambassadors of national pride.

D’Tigress secured the 2025 title in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, with a commanding 78–64 victory over Mali in the final. The win capped off another undefeated campaign, reinforcing their legacy as the most successful women’s basketball team in Africa.

The celebration not only recognized their continental success but also served as a powerful message of encouragement to athletes across the nation.
