Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika played a key role as Club Brugge began the new Belgian football season with silverware, defeating Union St. Gilloise 2-1 on Sunday to clinch the 2025 Belgian Super Cup.
The high-stakes clash at the Jan Breydel Stadium served as a rematch of last year’s Super Cup, which Union had won 2-1. This time, despite missing last season’s top scorer Promise David, Union took an early lead in the 15th minute through Franjo Ivanovic.
Club Brugge responded in the 31st minute when Christos Tzolis calmly slotted home from the penalty spot to equalize. Just before halftime, captain Hans Vanaken headed in Tzolis’ pinpoint corner to complete the turnaround and give Brugge a 2-1 advantage.
Union pushed hard in the second half, dominating possession, but Club Brugge’s disciplined defense anchored by a stellar Onyedika performance held firm.
Onyedika was instrumental in the midfield battle, finishing the match with the most tackles (3), an impressive 89% pass accuracy, one clearance, five recoveries, and four ground duels won. The Nigerian midfielder’s composure and work rate over the full 90 minutes were key in preserving Brugge’s lead.
The victory marks Raphael Onyedika’s fourth title with Club Brugge, adding to his 2022–23 Belgian Super Cup, the 2023–24 Belgian Pro League title, and the 2024–25 Belgian Cup win.
