The highly anticipated 2025-26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season kicked off on Friday at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta with a thrilling clash between reigning champions Remo Stars and last season’s runners-up Rivers United.
The encounter, which pitted two of Nigeria’s biggest football powerhouses against each other, lived up to its billing as both sides showed intent from the onset.
Rivers United stunned the champions just minutes into the game when Aniekeme Okon had the last touch to open scoring after a quick attacking move. But Remo Stars, showing the resilience that earned them their maiden NPFL crown last season, struck back almost immediately through new signing Victor Mbaoma, who restored parity with a fine finish in the ninth minute.
From then on, the game became a test of willpower and physicality. The Sky Blue Stars pushed forward in search of a winner, with chances falling to their forwards, but they failed to make them count. Rivers United, known for their defensive discipline, held firm until a late setback saw defender Temple Emekayi sent off for dangerous play, forcing the visitors to finish the match with ten men.

Friday’s showdown marked the 12th meeting between the two sides. Historically, Rivers United have dominated the fixture, winning seven of their previous encounters and drawing three. Remo Stars’ only victory came in May 2024 when they defeated the Pride of Rivers 2-1 in a crucial late-season tie.
The rivalry had already been tested twice in pre-season, with Rivers United defeating Remo Stars 3-0 at the Eko International Cup before both sides played out a goalless draw at the ValueJet Cup.
For Remo Stars, the MKO Abiola Sports Complex serves as a temporary home while renovation work continues at their Ikenne base. Despite the familiar challenges of playing away from their true home, the Sky Blue Stars showed strong intent as they began their title defense.
With the season now officially underway, NPFL fans can look forward to a packed weekend of action as the remaining fixtures are scheduled for Sunday.
