Nigerian football has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Shooting Stars Sports Club assistant coach Akin Olowokere, who collapsed and died during a training session on Monday morning at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode.

Eyewitnesses reported that Olowokere slumped in the middle of the team’s morning drills and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The tragedy comes just two days after the former footballer and ex-Chairman of the Akoko South East Football Association (FA) in Ondo State was officially unveiled as one of Shooting Stars’ new assistant coaches, in a video widely shared on the club’s social media pages.

In an emotional statement, the Oluyole Warriors paid tribute to Olowokere’s dedication and character:

“It is with deep shock and profound sadness that Shooting Stars Sports Club announces the passing of our beloved Coach Akin Olowokere, who tragically slumped and passed away on the pitch this morning, August 11, 2025. Coach Olowokere was not only a dedicated and passionate football tactician, but also a mentor, friend, and father figure to the players and many others. His commitment to the growth and success of our team was unwavering.”

The club extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the wider Nigerian football community, describing his passing as a monumental loss to the sport.

Olowokere had been part of Shooting Stars’ preseason preparations for the ValueJet Cup 2025 in Ijebu Ode. The team is set to play its second match of the tournament following a 1–0 defeat to Ikorodu City in their opening fixture.

The late coach leaves behind a legacy of commitment, mentorship, and passion for Nigerian football.
