The Nigerian football community came together on Friday to celebrate one of its greatest icons, Joseph Yobo, as the former Super Eagles captain and Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner turned 45.

Born on 6 September 1980, Joseph Michael Yobo enjoyed a career spanning more than a decade at the highest level of international football. Renowned for his leadership, composure, and consistency at centre-back, Yobo was a pillar of the Super Eagles’ defence and a symbol of resilience.

Yobo earned 101 international caps, becoming Nigeria’s record appearance holder before his retirement in 2014. He represented the Super Eagles at three FIFA World Cups (2002, 2010, 2014) and six Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, underlining his importance to the team across multiple generations.

AFCON Glory and World Cup Milestones

Joseph Yobo crowning moment came in 2013, when he captained Nigeria to victory at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, the country’s third continental title. The triumph secured his legacy as one of the most successful leaders in Nigerian football history.

In June 2014, he was part of Stephen Keshi’s squad for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Yobo played a key role in defence, including starting in Nigeria’s 1-0 group-stage victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. On 30 June 2014, he reached the historic milestone of 100 international appearances, captaining the Super Eagles in their round-of-16 clash against France.

Following his retirement from international football in 2014, Joseph Yobo remained connected to the Super Eagles.
