Nigeria’s Super Eagles have slipped to 45th place in the latest FIFA men’s world ranking, their lowest position in more than six years.

From 2020 to 2022, Nigeria’s global standing remained steady around the mid-30s, ending both 2020 and 2022 at 35th, and 2021 at 36th. By 2023, however, the team had fallen further, ranked around 40th to 42nd, before dropping to 45th at the end of 2024.

On the African continent in the global ranking, Nigeria now sits sixth, behind Morocco (11th), Senegal (18th), Egypt (35th), Algeria (38th), and Côte d’Ivoire (44th). This shift reflects the growing strength of Africa’s footballing nations, with several sides making significant progress in global standings.

Despite remaining a major force in African football, the Super Eagles’ latest position marks a worrying slip and places them outside the top five on the continent for the first time in years.
