The Super Falcons of Nigeria have sealed qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a 1-1 draw with the Benin Republic on Tuesday at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.
The reigning African champions advanced 3-1 on aggregate after securing a 2-0 victory in the first leg of the final qualifying round in Cotonou.
Head coach Justine Madugu made a single change to the starting lineup from the first encounter, with Asisat Oshoala returning to replace Chiwendu Ihezuo.
Nigeria began the match with intent, dominating possession and forcing the visitors into their defensive half. The pressure paid off early when Ashleigh Plumptre rose highest to head home from Esther Okoronkwo’s precise corner in the 12th minute, giving the hosts a deserved lead.
Despite several promising opportunities, the Super Falcons failed to extend their advantage before halftime.
The Benin Amazons grew into the game after the break and found an equalizer in the 61st minute through Yasminath Djibril, who capitalized on a rare defensive lapse.
Nigeria, however, comfortably managed the remainder of the contest to secure passage to Morocco 2026, where the tournament will take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
The qualification continues the Super Falcons proud record as the only nation to feature in every edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, underlining their dominance on the continent.
