After a modest start to her 2025 Diamond League campaign, Nigerian sprint queen and world record holder Tobi Amusan is setting her sights on a stronger performance at the Shanghai Diamond League meet on May 3, Modzero Sports reports.
The 100m hurdles star opened her season in Xiamen with a fourth-place finish, clocking 12.74 seconds in a stacked field led by reigning world champion Danielle Williams, who took top honours in 12.53 seconds. Grace Stark of the USA and South Africa’s Marione Fourie finished second and third respectively.
While Amusan missed the podium, her performance marked a solid return to elite competition following her last major outing at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Xiamen race also signaled her intent to reclaim top form as the season progresses.
A three-time Diamond League champion (2021, 2022, and 2023), Amusan remains one of the most formidable names on the circuit. Now working under the guidance of legendary coach Glen Mills—best known for training sprint icon Usain Bolt—she’s sharpening her edge for what promises to be a tightly contested season.
The entry list for Shanghai confirms another heavyweight clash. Williams, still the woman to beat, enters with a season best of 12.53s. Stark, currently ranked fifth in the world and coming off a 12.58s finish in Xiamen, will be eager to maintain her momentum. Fourie, a rising force, has a season best of 12.62s and a personal record of 12.49s, positioning her as a serious medal threat.
The field also includes the Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton (PB 12.44s, world no. 7), Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska (PB 12.37s), USA’s Nia Ali (SB 13.23s), and China’s Wu Yanni, who will have home support behind her.
As part of the prestigious Wanda Diamond League series, Shanghai provides a key opportunity for athletes to accumulate points and qualify for the Zurich final. For Amusan, it’s not just about titles—it’s about building race rhythm, sharpening her form, and laying down a marker ahead of the World Athletics Championships later this year in Tokyo.
All eyes will be on the Nigerian sprint hurdler as she looks to reclaim her dominance and signal her readiness for another golden season.
