Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, booked their place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dramatic 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.

A stoppage-time strike from Michelle Alozie secured the win and propelled the nine-time champions into their 10th WAFCON final, reinforcing their campaign mantra, “Mission X” — the pursuit of a record-extending 10th continental title.

The Super Falcons took the lead just before halftime through team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who calmly converted a penalty in the 45th minute. The spot-kick was awarded after a foul by South African defender Bambanani Mbane, and Ajibade’s effort managed to beat goalkeeper Andile Dlamini, despite her getting a hand to it.

The goal was notably the first conceded by Nigeria in the tournament after keeping a clean sheet for an impressive 442 minutes.

South Africa came out strong in the second half and were rewarded for their pressure in the 60th minute. Osinachi Ohale fouled her opponent inside the box, and Linda Motlhalo converted the resulting penalty to draw the Banyana Banyana level.

With the match seemingly heading for extra time, Michelle Alozie’s late effort, a curling cross that found its way into the net — stunned the South Africans and sealed the thrilling win for Justine Madugu’s side.

The victory also ended South Africa’s 15-match unbeaten run at the WAFCON and confirmed Nigeria’s spot in the final, where they will face the winner of the second semi-final between hosts Morocco and Ghana.

The Super Falcons remain on course to capture a historic 10th WAFCON title as they aim to cement their legacy as the most successful women’s national team on the continent.
