As the Super Eagles prepare for their must-win 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, team captain, William Troost-Ekong, has assured Nigerians that the squad is fully locked in for victory. In an interview with members of the press after the team’s second training session in Kigali, the defender emphasized the team’s fighting mentality, the impact of new coach Éric Chelle, and the high stakes of this crucial encounter.

“Pressure Is a Privilege” – Ekong on Super Eagles’ Mindset

“Everything’s been good. First training session, full squad present, and the energy is high. We all know the magnitude of the task ahead. There’s pressure, but I always say, pressure is a privilege. Everyone understands what is at stake, and we’re ready to give it our all. It’s also exciting working with a new coach, learning fresh ideas, and adapting to his tactical demands. Our focus is to understand his vision and execute on Friday”

“No One Is Afraid of This Moment” – Drawing from Experience

“We’re fortunate to have several experienced players in the squad. Our role is to guide the younger players and ensure they understand the weight of these games. Everyone is vital—no player is bigger than the team. These are the moments when leaders step up, and none of us shy away from that responsibility. As I said earlier, pressure is a privilege”.

Ekong on Eric Chelle’s First Training Sessions

“Great! It’s always a special feeling when I put on this jersey. We’ve welcomed him with open arms, and he’s been very clear about what he expects from us. Now, it’s about absorbing his philosophy and executing it. The focus is sharp, the hunger is there, and we’re all looking forward to Friday”.

“It’s a Must-Win – No Room for Errors”

“We break it down into clear objectives. If you focus too much on the occasion, you can get lost in the moment. We respect Rwanda—they’re top of the group for a reason. They also have a new coach, so we know it’ll be a high-intensity match. But for us, the job is simple: focus on what we can control and get the win”.

“We Live for Moments Like This”

“100%! These are the games you dream of playing, high stakes, high expectations, and a chance to make history. For me, this is why we do it. Big players step up on big occasions and we are ready to deliver. If you want to be at the top, you must embrace the pressure. We have over 230 million fans… they are our biggest supporters and also our toughest critics. That’s the reality of playing for Nigeria. We understand the responsibility that comes with this jersey, and we are determined to make the country proud.”

With the Super Eagles winless in four games and currently fifth in the group, the mission is clear—win or risk missing another World Cup. Friday’s clash against Rwanda is do-or-die, and Troost-Ekong has sent a clear message: Nigeria is coming with fire!
