Nigeria’s victorious Super Falcons have landed in Abuja to a grand reception following their historic triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The team arrived aboard a chartered flight at approximately 2:26 p.m. at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where a jubilant crowd of supporters and top government officials had gathered to receive them. Many fans had waited for hours to catch a glimpse of the African champions and celebrate their achievement.
On hand to welcome the Super Falcons were the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris; Minister of Culture and Tourism, Hanatu Musawa; and Minister for Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim. The dignitaries led the cheers and joined in honoring the players for their incredible performance on the continental stage.
As part of the celebrations, the team will parade the WAFCON trophy through the streets of Abuja in an open-top bus, passing through major areas including Airport Road, Berger Junction, Maitama, and Wuse Market. The parade will conclude at the Presidential Villa, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to formally host and commend the team.
The Super Falcons made headlines on Saturday night after pulling off a remarkable 3–2 comeback win against host nation Morocco in the final played at the Stade Olympique in Rabat. Trailing by two goals at halftime, the Nigerian side launched a spirited second-half fightback to seal their 10th WAFCON title, extending their record as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
The win also preserved Nigeria’s perfect record in WAFCON finals, having never lost in a championship match, and solidified the Super Falcons’ status as the queens of African football.
