A Leader Poised to Confront Long-Standing Challenges

Beyond his new mandate, Dr Dunkwu Chamberlain Nnamdi holds a significant national portfolio as Deputy Chief of Staff to Rt. Hon Abbas Tajudeen PhD, Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives. His appointment to lead the Aquatics Federation places him at the helm of a sector that demands innovation, strategic resource management, and a long-term development blueprint.

Aquatic sports in Nigeria continue to grapple with persistent challenges, including inadequate funding, poorly maintained facilities, lack of modern timing technology, insufficient coaching programs, and limited nationwide participation. High maintenance costs for swimming pools and low government prioritisation compared to football have also hindered progress.

Stakeholders now look to the new president to provide clear direction and sustainable solutions capable of elevating aquatics beyond its current limitations.

Dunkwu Chamberlain Outlines His National Development Vision

Speaking after his inauguration, Dr Dunkwu Chamberlain Nnamdi articulated a mission grounded in inclusiveness and long-term growth.

He stated
“Our plan is for the whole country and not just limiting our activities to riverine areas and by the special grace of God we have other viable platforms to use to develop the swimming federation. You know Aquatics sports is capital intensive so we are going to do our best to ensure that we get enough funds, enough resources to organize tournaments, to organize trainings, to organize championships for the federation, and to ensure that the swimmers that emerge from such champions are encouraged to attend international meets where we can further expose them.”

His remarks underscore a commitment to nationwide talent expansion, modernised training programs, and increased participation in international competitions.

Early Actions Signal Strategic Partnerships

Demonstrating swift action, Dr Dunkwu Chamberlain has already launched a collaborative initiative with the Nigeria University Games Association NUGA aimed at discovering and nurturing young swimmers with long-term potential.

The announcement was made during the 27th Nigeria University Games in Jos, where swimming events were co-organised with the Aquatics Federation. The partnership is already producing early results with several emerging athletes showcasing impressive performances.

Dr Chamberlain praised NUGA for its contribution to collegiate sports development, highlighting the initiative as a strategic pathway to revitalise swimming talent pipelines across the country. The federation envisions a system where university athletes can transition seamlessly from campus competitions to elite global representation.

Nigeria Aquatics Federation: A Renewed Commitment to Excellence

As the official governing body for swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming, and open water events, the Nigeria Aquatics Federation NAF carries the responsibility of regulating and advancing water sports nationwide. An affiliate of both the International Swimming Federation FINA and the Nigerian Olympic Committee, the Federation is committed to elevating Nigeria’s profile in the global aquatics arena.

Over the years, NAF has worked to build a sustainable foundation for athlete development while collaborating with schools, academies, and private institutions to design training programs, host competitions, and expand facility access.

The overarching mission remains clear
to establish Nigeria as a global force in aquatic sports by nurturing homegrown talent, improving training infrastructure, and providing opportunities for athletes to compete at the highest levels.

With Dr Dunkwu Chamberlain Nnamdi now leading the charge, the task ahead is to transform this vision from aspiration into an enduring national achievement.
