Zimbabwe head coach Michael Nees has acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge ahead as his team prepares to face Nigeria’s Super Eagles in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. With both sides vying for redemption in their Group C campaign, Nees admits that Zimbabwe must deliver a top-tier performance to stand any chance of leaving Uyo with a result.
The Warriors remain winless after five games and sit at the bottom of the table with just three points. Their last meeting with Nigeria in November ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw, but this time, the stakes are even higher as both teams seek to boost their qualification hopes.
“We Expect a Tough Opponent” – Nees
Speaking after Zimbabwe’s first training session on Sunday morning at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium’s practice pitch, Nees praised Nigeria’s quality and emphasized that his team must rise to the occasion.
“Benin Republic was really strong, but Nigeria, with the names they parade, are top-class. They messed their campaign up at the beginning, but now it’s the third coach involved, and they’ve just won away in Rwanda, which is always a tough place,” Nees said.
“They’ll come at us with confidence and full power to turn things around – and so will we. It will be an exciting game. We have to perform to our maximum. We know they’re a tough opponent who will give everything, and we must match that intensity.”
Embracing the Challenge
Nees also encouraged his players to stay confident and embrace the high-pressure atmosphere. He emphasized that Zimbabwe must focus on preparation and self-belief rather than being overawed by the Super Eagles’ pedigree.
“We must accept the challenge – the climate, the pace, the conditions – and enjoy it. We mustn’t be afraid. We can play football. We’ll analyze them, we’ll analyze ourselves, and the players don’t need to be nervous,” he explained.
“They’ve proven many times that they’re very good players. I’m really looking forward to this match.”

While Zimbabwe’s optimism is palpable, history is firmly on Nigeria’s side. The Super Eagles are unbeaten in their last seven encounters with the Warriors, with four wins and three draws.
