Today was a day of mixed emotions as Alex Iwobi etch his name deeper into history by becoming the first Nigerian player ever to play 300 matches in the Premier League, yet that personal triumph was dampened by Fulham’s narrow 2–1 defeat away at Newcastle United.

Newcastle United with a late strike edged Fulham in a tense Premier League clash at St. James’ Park. Jacob Murphy opened the scoring early for the hosts after sustained pressure, before Fulham fought back through Sasa Lukic’s well-taken equalizer midway into the second half.

However, just when it looked like the game would end in a draw, Bruno Guimarães struck late to seal victory for Newcastle, spoiling what was meant to be a celebratory evening for Alex Iwobi, who marked his historic 300th Premier League appearance, the first ever by a Nigerian player.

Career Path

Alex Iwobi’s journey to 300 Premier League appearances reflects a steady rise through England’s top flight. He began at Arsenal, where he made 100 league appearances after progressing from their academy, before moving to Everton in 2019, adding another 123 games over four seasons as a key midfield figure.

Since joining Fulham in 2023, Iwobi has continued his consistency, featuring in over 75 matches for the Cottagers. Combined, these appearances have made him the first Nigerian player in history to reach the 300-game milestone in the Premier League.

His achievement surpasses the previous Nigerian benchmark (held by Shola Ameobi) and cements his status as Nigeria’s most enduring presence in English top-flight history.

On a continental scale, Iwobi joins an elite group of African footballers who have reached or passed 300 Premier League games: Kolo Touré (353), Mohamed Salah (309), Jordan Ayew (305), and Wilfried Zaha (305).

Natinal Impact

From Lagos to London, Nigerian fans celebrated today, not just for a personal milestone but for recognition that Nigerian talent can endure, compete, and leave a lasting legacy at the very top level of club football.

For Fulham, the result is a blow in their bid to climb the table, but having the Super Eagles Midfielder, Iwobi as a standard bearer is itself a source of pride. Even on an off day, his presence gives the squad identity and ambition.
