Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets secured a semifinal berth at the WAFU B U17 Championship following a tense goalless clash with Burkina Faso in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

The encounter, held at the Stade du Lycée Scientifique, ended 0-0 but still proved enough to send Nigeria through as Group B leaders. Both Nigeria and Burkina Faso wrapped up the group stage with four points, but the Eaglets edged ahead courtesy of a superior goal difference.

Nigeria had earlier stunned Benin Republic with a dominant 4-1 win in their opening game, while Burkina Faso managed a narrow 1-0 victory over the same opponent. That set up Saturday’s fixture as a decisive battle for group supremacy.

From kickoff, Manu Garba’s side enjoyed more of the ball, pressing high and creating half-chances, but the Burkina Faso backline held its ground with disciplined defending and crucial saves from their goalkeeper. The Burkinabe also threatened occasionally on the break, though they too fell short in front of goal.

When the final whistle sounded, Nigeria were left frustrated by their missed chances but relieved to have done just enough to top the group. Their four goals against Benin proved decisive, sealing a path to the semifinals.

The semifinal fixtures are now confirmed: Nigeria will face Ghana in a highly anticipated regional derby, while Côte d’Ivoire lock horns with Burkina Faso.

The ultimate prize at this tournament is qualification for the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations. Having failed to reach the continental stage last time, the Golden Eaglets know only victory will secure them a ticket. Coach Manu Garba will be demanding sharper finishing as his young side chase redemption and a spot in the final.
