President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday hosted Nigeria’s triumphant Super Falcons at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, following their dramatic comeback victory over Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The win, which earned Nigeria a record-extending 10th continental title, was met with national celebration — and a generous reward from the Commander-in-Chief.
In a colourful ceremony held at the Presidential Banquet Hall, President Tinubu, joined by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, honoured the team for what he described as a moment of national inspiration. The Super Falcons came from two goals down to defeat host nation Morocco 3–2 in Rabat on Saturday night, reaffirming their dominance as the most successful national team in the history of African women’s football.
As part of his recognition of their achievement, the President conferred the prestigious national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on each of the 24 players. In addition, he announced a monetary reward of $100,000 USD for each player, and gifted each of them a brand-new three-bedroom apartment. Members of the technical crew were not left out, as they were each awarded $50,000 USD in recognition of their critical role in the team’s success.
President Tinubu praised the team’s character, noting that their comeback story reflected the indomitable spirit of the Nigerian people.
“You have done Nigeria proud,” he said. “Your comeback was not just about scoring goals. It was a display of resilience, determination, and unity. You’ve shown what it means to fight for your nation with everything you have. Today, we honour not just your victory, but your example.”
He expressed gratitude to the players, coaches, and backroom staff for their commitment, describing their journey through the tournament as a testament to grit and teamwork. Tinubu also acknowledged the immense support the team received from Nigerians at home and abroad, stating that the Falcons had lifted the spirit of over 200 million citizens.
The event was graced by top government officials, sports administrators, and dignitaries who joined the team in celebrating what many have called the most memorable final in WAFCON history. There were smiles, cheers, and moments of heartfelt emotion as players expressed their gratitude to the President and the Nigerian people.
Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named Player of the Tournament, delivered a thank-you speech on behalf of the players. She praised the federal government for fulfilling its promises and assured Nigerians that the team would continue to strive for excellence on the global stage.
“This gesture means so much to us,” Ajibade said. “Thank you, Mr. President, for your support and encouragement. We are proud to bring this trophy home and even more proud to serve our country.”
The Falcons’ latest WAFCON win adds to previous triumphs in 2014, 2016, 2018, and now 2024, making it five titles in the last decade. Their victory over Morocco also ensured they maintained a perfect record in WAFCON finals, having won all 10 final appearances.
As the celebrations continued in Abuja, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in women’s sports and empowering Nigerian youth. He described the team’s win as a new chapter in the nation’s sporting history — one that showcases Nigeria’s capacity to lead, inspire, and triumph against the odds.
With cash prizes, real estate, and national honours now added to their names, the Super Falcons have not only claimed a continental title but also cemented their place as national icons in the hearts of millions.
