Residents of Abuja and surrounding areas will have the rare opportunity to witness the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy up close as the Super Falcons return home on Monday after their historic 10th continental title win in Morocco. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made the announcement in an official statement released on Sunday.
The victorious Nigerian team is scheduled to land at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by 12 noon, and plans are in motion for a celebratory trophy parade across key areas of the Federal Capital Territory. The NFF is organizing a drive-through procession with the players and coaching crew aboard an open-roof bus, allowing thousands of fans to catch a glimpse of the prestigious trophy and celebrate with the champions.
“We are making arrangements to have a trophy parade with the players and their coaches in an open-roof bus, and plying through Airport Road, Berger junction, Maitama and Wuse Market areas all the way to the Presidential Villa,” said Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, General Secretary of the NFF.
“This will afford a good number of people in those areas to have a rare sight of the Women AFCON trophy.”
The Super Falcons secured their 10th WAFCON title in spectacular fashion on Saturday night, overcoming a two-goal deficit to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 at the Stade Olympique in Rabat. The thrilling comeback, which saw Nigeria score three unanswered goals in the second half, further cemented the team’s legacy as the most successful side in African women’s football history.
Following their arrival and trophy parade, the team is expected to be received at the Presidential Villa by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) later on Monday afternoon. The President had earlier promised a befitting celebration for the team after speaking with the players and coaching staff via video call shortly after their triumph.
The open-bus trophy parade is not only a victory lap for the Super Falcons but also an opportunity for Nigerians in the capital city to partake in the celebrations. The route covering Airport Road, Berger Junction, Maitama, and Wuse Market has been selected to maximize visibility and fan interaction, bringing the euphoria of the championship win to the streets of Abuja.
The NFF encouraged residents to come out in their numbers to celebrate the champions, who not only lifted the trophy but also showcased immense resilience, skill, and national pride on the continental stage.
The Super Falcons’ latest victory is a significant milestone, making Nigeria the undisputed powerhouse of African women’s football and offering a fresh wave of inspiration to aspiring female athletes across the country.
